When should personal protective equipment (PPE) be worn during steamfitting tasks?

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential in ensuring the safety and health of workers in various trades, including steamfitting. Wearing PPE at all times when on site is crucial as it provides a consistent level of protection against potential hazards that can arise unexpectedly in any environment or task.

Steamfitting tasks may expose workers to various risks, including high temperatures, pressure, noise, chemicals, and sharp tools. Even when performing routine or low-risk jobs, the environment could change or be affected by other workers’ activities. Therefore, having PPE on at all times means that workers are always prepared for any unforeseen incidents that could lead to accidents or injuries.

In contrast, only wearing PPE for high-risk tasks, when working indoors, or upon request from a supervisor does not guarantee full protection. Risks can be present in any situation, regardless of the perceived danger level, and relying on selective use of PPE increases the likelihood of an accident occurring. Thus, the safest and most effective practice is to wear PPE consistently while on the job site.
